Chapter 6: Turbulent Childhood
I rejected him. My formidable reputation was well-known in the village, so the young man didn''t dare use force.
"Do you want money? I can give you money," he said, pulling out his wallet and offering me cash.
"No, it''s not about money. I can''t do this. It would ruin not only my reputation but also yours. It''s not good for either of us. Please leave!" I responded.
After hearing my words, he left. I struggled to understand how a young man who appeared so gentle and refined could do such a thing for a long time.
According to the proverb, "You can''t judge a book by its cover." My guard against others gradually increased after that. I came to understand that if I wasn''t careful, numerous people who appeared to be innocuous may ruin or hurt me.
So, we lived our days in hardship. One day, my first little sister told me she had dropped her clothes on the way back and wanted to pick it up.
We only had a few clothes, which were all tattered and worn. I knew the one my sister mentioned was comparatively superior and had fewer patches, so it’s worth picking up.
"Which way did you come back from? Where do you think you dropped it? I''ll help you search for it!"
My sister told me the route, and I followed it to look for her clothes. Halfway through, I encountered an old man from the village.
"Grandpa, have you seen my sister''s clothes? She just dropped it on the road."
"I have! I''ll take you there." The old man''s eyes sparkled.
So, he led the way, and I followed him as he guided me to find my sister''s clothes.
I felt increasingly uneasy as I saw him take me off the path and toward a deserted area.
"Where are we going?" I asked anxiously, sensing that my safety was in jeopardy.
